Humanity 2.0: where the tech are we going and do we want to go there?

Does embracing new technology cost us more than it benefits us? What effects do email, cell phones, iPods, or social networking have on us spiritually, psychologically, or emotionally? Spark Northwest is hosting a workshop on Orcas Island to help figure it all out. My buddy Leif Hansen is the owner of Spark Northwest and the workshopâ€™s co-organizer. Iâ€™ve found Leif to be passionate, smart, and thoughtful, so Iâ€™m sure there will be some stimulating and thought-provoking discussion at Humanity 2.0. At the very least, itâ€™s an excuse to visit Orcas Island for the weekend. Thatâ€™s never bad.

I think everyone knows the drill of this by now. Brady Forrest (of O’Reilly Media) and Bre Pettis (of Make Magazine) are hosting the fourth Ignite Seattle event on Wednesday. If you haven’t been, it starts out with a Make-inspired contest (building bridges, dropping eggs, etc), and then that’s followed by three rounds of 5 minute lighting talks. This is one of the best geek events in Seattle these days – check out the Ignite Blog for speaker information.

Objectified in Seattle: Tickets are on sale now for a special screening of Objectified, a documentary about manufactured objects and the people who design them. Director Gary Hustwit will be on hand for a post-film discussion. Wednesday, June 10, 7pm at Seattle Cinerama.
