Speculations Book Group: Snow Crash

Thursday, October 16th
Elliot Bay Book Co.
101 S. Main St. (Pioneer Square)

Every month, Elliot Bay Book Company hosts a Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Club. In October, they’ll be discussing one of the classics of hacker literature – Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash. Snow Crash is on Time Magazine’s list of 100 Best Novels, next to another seminal cyberpunk work, William Gibsons’s Neuromancer. If you’re reading this blog, you need to read Snow Crash. Then head down to Elliot Bay in mid-October for a good discussion.

Naomi Klein: Shock Doctrine

Thursday, September 27th
Town Hall
1119 8th Ave. (Seattle)

One of the earliest critiques of the United States’ invasion of Iraq was the immediate privatization of the Iraqis’ economy. In her new book, Naomi Klein refers to this as “disaster capitalism”, where a government sweeps into an area immediately after a catastrophe establishing wide-randing laissez-faire economic policies. Check out a short video on the subject put together by her and filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men). After that, head down to Town Hall on Thursday to see her in person.
