Orchestral Manoeuvres (with a Wiimote) in the Dark

As someone who grew up in the early days of video games—we’re talking Pong and the Atari 2600 here—I tend to associate video game sounds with crude and primitive bleeps and bloops. (Heck, in order to get game audio from our old TRS80 Model I Level I, we’d place an AM radio next to the monitor and tune it between stations. The changes in level and intensity of static was our accompaniment. But I digress…)

Gaming has come a long way since then, of course, and I think there’s no better evidence of this than Video Games Live, the national concert tour in which symphony orchestras and choirs perform music from games such as Final Fantasy, Tron, Frogger, and Earthworm Jim. As they say on their website, “It’s the power & emotion of a symphony orchestra mixed with the excitement and energy of a rock concert and the technology and interactivity of a video game all completely synchronized to amazing cutting edge video screen visuals, state-of-the-art lighting and special on-stage interactive segments with the audience.”

It’s a long way from bleeps and bloops, is what I’m sayin’.

VGL is coming to Seattle on Saturday and will include a debut of music from Halo 3:ODST. Halo Composers Marty Oâ€™Donnell and Michael Salvatori are slated to make an appearance, as are Gabe & Tycho from Penny Arcade. Site update – January ’09

Okay, so it’s a little embarrassing that it has taken us until the day before the inauguration to replace the post we put up the day before the election. But there’s some synchronicity in the timing, too. After all, the election was about hope and change, the inauguration will be about hope and change, and this post is about hope and change.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

The hope: We’re doing our best to keep the Google calendar up to date and we hope to continue doing that. Thanks to everyone who has been sending us event updates. Please keep ‘em coming. We can’t respond to every email, but we’ll post as many events as we can. We’d like the calendar to continue to be a useful resource for our fellow Seattle geeks.

The change: As far as keeping up with posting about events… well, both Justin and I are (clearly) having a hard time of that right now, and that’s likely going to continue in the near term. So, we’re very much open to new contributors coming on board. There’s no pay involved and very little glory, but if you’re interested in promoting a healthy and vibrant local technology community, we’d love to have your help. Even if you’re only interested in writing the occasional short post – a review of a recent event or a preview of something cool that people should know about – every little bit will help. Just send an email to sooie@meetatthepig.com to get the ball rolling.

Thanks for those of you who’ve continued to visit. We hope you’ve gotten some value out of Meet at the Pig, and we look forward to evolving the site in 2009.
