It’s a wonder we haven’t mentioned Greenwood Space Travel Supply on this blog yet, though I primarily chalk that up to the rumors that it’s actually a front for some kind of writing workshop for kids. Nonetheless, the store is staging a political protest on one of the hot button astronomical issues of our days: Is Pluto a planet or not? Protesters will be gathering in front of the store, then march up Greenwood Ave. Noted pro-Pluto advocates such as Tim Lloyd and Nicole Brodeur will also be on hand.
It’s no wonder that neither Clinton nor Obama have taken a side in this controversial issue. To commit one way or another would no doubt alienate some critical part of their electorate.

Thanks for keeping up the advocacy for Pluto’s planet status. I wish I could have been there, but Seattle is a long way from New Jersey. There is a strong movement among both professional astronomers and lay people to get the IAU’s ridiculous demotion overturned. In August, Dr. Mark Sykes will be hosting a conference on this issue, “The Great Planet Debate.” More information can be found at http://gpd.jhuapl.edu/
